The Unwritten Rules of Cigar Shop Etiquette

Oct 1, 2023

Etiquette varies from one region to another, reflecting distinct sets of socially accepted customs and behaviors. Through my extensive visits to numerous cigar shops across the world, I’ve learned several etiquette practices that have helped me navigate each location. Follow these 10 rules to ensure your next cigar lounge visit is a success:

  1. Master the Art of Cutting: Cutting a cigar takes practice, and mistakes can happen. The goal is to avoid cutting off too much of the cigar. Overcutting can lead to loose tobacco in your mouth and the wrapper unraveling.
  2. Proper Lighting: Ensure that the cigar is lit evenly and not too hot, creating an enjoyable and consistent burn.
  3. Band Removal Timing: Avoid removing the band prematurely. Cigar bands are attached with adhesive, and taking them off too soon can damage the wrapper. The heat of the cigar will loosen the adhesive, making it easier to remove later.
  4. No Crushing or Grinding: Resist the urge to crush or grind out a cigar. Doing so can release a “smoldering stale aroma.” Instead, place the cigar in the ashtray and allow it to burn out naturally. Snuffing out a cigar can be seen as a sign of dissatisfaction with either the cigar or the shop, depending on the establishment.
  5. Mind Your Ash: Be conscious of ash management. Periodically, gently roll the ash into the ashtray to prevent a mess.
  6. Respect Personal Experience: Do not cut or light someone else’s cigar. Smoking a cigar is a personal experience, and each individual should handle their own.
  7. Smell with Care: When smelling a cigar, hold the foot about half an inch away from your nose, avoiding sticking it directly to your nose.
  8. Avoid Negative Comments: Refrain from making negative remarks about someone else’s cigar choices. Everyone’s tastes are different, and respect for individual preferences is key.
  9. No Outside Cigars: Never bring cigars from outside into a cigar shop. It’s customary to enjoy the offerings available at the shop.
  10. No Smoking in the Humidor: Smoking inside the humidor is considered disrespectful and should be avoided.

Embracing the diverse world of cigar shop etiquette enriches your experiences and pays homage to the unique traditions and practices that make each location special. By following these ten rules, you’ll not only ensure a successful visit to your next cigar lounge but also become a respectful ambassador of the rich culture of cigar aficionados. Remember that mastering these etiquette practices isn’t just about protocol but about enhancing the enjoyment of a fine cigar while fostering connections with fellow enthusiasts worldwide. So, as you embark on your next cigar adventure, do so with confidence and consideration for the time-honored customs that make the world of cigars so fascinating and rewarding.
